Welcome to the team!
This guide will give you step by step instructions on how to register and title your Talaria, Sur-Ron, E-Ride or any brand e-moto in Utah.
Note: This will NOT make your bike street legal but will allow you to get your OHV Sticker, title, and registration in your name. This allows you to ride off road without worrying about getting a ticket!
Note: The process should be similar for Montana.
Step 1. Get a Vehicle Application for Utah Title and Registration - TC-656
If bought new: Fill out the top with all the required information and have the dealer fill out the bottom portion (Section 7). Amped Bikes does this if purchased in person through them in person. Technically this is all you should need. Unfortunately, the DMV doesn't understand that these bikes don't come with titles from the manufacturer so the following steps are recommended so you only have to make one trip to the DMV.
If bought used with/without Title: Fill out as much as you can
Step 2. Print out a picture of your bike.
Preferably a full sized sheet. Black and white is ok. Make sure to get the full bike in the image with a plain background.
Step 3. Take a copy of your Receipt or Bill of Sale
Screenshot your email receipt or take your physical one. Either should work.
Step 4. Take the manual with you
Only some people have needed it. Might as well take it anyway to save a trip if you have it.
Step 5. Print and fill out TC-569A
If new: I recommend leaving the "Value of Vehicle" empty and only filling out "Purchase Price". It could cause complications at the DMV if filled out. Under the "Explain why the title was not obtained" section just state that you bought directly from the dealer and no Title was provided. Something along those lines.
If used without title: Same as above. For the explanation section mention that no title was provided from the manufacturer.
If used with title: This form shouldn't be needed.
Step 6. Print and fill out TC-661
New bikes bought from dealer: Not needed.
Used Bikes with or without titles: This is the hardest part. You need to get the VIN inspected by a police officer and have them fill out this form. Easiest way is to ask your local neighborhood cop if they can do it. Otherwise, you can dial the non emergency police line and ask for an VIN inspection appointment. Once made, take your bike to the appointment with the form and get it filled out.
Step 7. Taxes and fees
If bought new, there should be no additional taxes needed if you have a receipt saying it was already paid. You’d then need to only pay $35 to register and $6 to title.
If bought used, be prepared to pay for taxes!
Step 8. Go to the DMV!
Begin the conversation by stating you'd like to title and register an e-bike (NOT eMOTO) that you bought. If they hear the word motorcycle they will automatically think they need an existing title, which is bad if you don't have it. This isn't their fault, these bikes are just so new they haven't been trained on what to do.
Be calm but firm. If they insist you need a title but don’t have one, you can politely insist that they get their manager. I've had to do it a couple times. The manager usually knows what to do.
If all else fails, you may just need to go on another day and try again with another worker but doing these things will give you the best shot at getting it done!
Good luck!
